What Are Qubits?

Quantum computing is a rapidly developing technology that holds the promise of solving problems that are intractable for classical computers. At the heart of quantum computing are qubits, the basic building blocks of quantum computers.
Quantum Bit
A qubit, short for quantum bit, is the quantum equivalent of a classical bit, the basic unit of information in classical computing. While a classical bit can only be in one of two states, 0 or 1, a qubit can be in a superposition of both states, meaning it can be both 0 and 1 at the same time.
Faster Calculations
This property of qubits allows quantum computers to perform certain tasks exponentially faster than classical computers. For example, the factoring of large numbers, which is at the core of modern encryption, is believed to be infeasible for classical computers beyond a certain size, but can be done relatively easily by a quantum computer.
Multiple Physical Systems
Qubits can be implemented using a variety of physical systems, such as atoms, ions, superconducting circuits, and photons. Each system has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of scalability, error correction, and coherence time, among other factors.
Hard to Control
One of the biggest challenges in quantum computing is maintaining the fragile quantum state of the qubits, which is prone to decoherence due to interactions with the environment. To address this challenge, quantum error correction schemes have been developed that encode multiple qubits into a single, more robust logical qubit.
